Ben Aaronovitch has lifted the Peter Grant / Rivers of London books beyond their original "big bad" into new territory, and has done it with all his usual passion, tenderness and deadpan humour. An ever-expanding cast of diverse, human (well, you know what I mean) characters (not to mention Toby the Wonder Dog and Abigail's foxes) keep the pace moving forwards (like any good police initiative), and make for a wonderfully nuanced, funny and touching read. Also, if you can spot every last Douglas Adams reference, you can award yourself a big Norway-shaped prize (with crinkly edges).
