The literary quality of Moby Dick ranks among the best ever, but many of the ethical arguments are unsound. Also, the narrator vaunts the lifestyle of the whaling man yet seems completely unaware of the many freedoms he has surrendered, starting with his own rape near the book’s start and ending with his near death at the book’s conclusion. The humor and structure of the book itself are the main reasons I keep reading and re-reading it.
