Moby Dick
Herman Melville
Genre: Adventure, American Classic Literature
Thoughts:
I found this book to be very fact heavy with the story being secondary. I wish I was able to follow the story in a straighter line of progression rather than going back and forth with the whaling information every other chapter.
That isn't to say that some of the information wasn't interesting to learn, but when trying to follow a story, it was just an unsatisfying and dragging distraction. I did read that during the time of release, whaling was all the rage, so that, plus Melvilles own experiences with whaling, makes a lot of sense for its time. At least I came out of it with much more knowledge about whaling than when I started.

“But Faith, like a jackal, feeds among the tombs, and even from these dead doubts she gathers her most vital hope.”

This book can be summed up in two words: whale philosophy.
This was my third attempt and I got 60% through it. But I just can’t do it. It’s boring and too racist.

The story about Ahab and the whale: 3.5-3.8
The social historical commentary on whaling and how that worked back in the day, the biological descriptions and commentary on science/depictions of creatures and general history. 4.5- maybe even a 5, but I'm biased having a background in natural science and also have had the honour to have met and had lectures from my country's most renowned whale expert!
