starbuck was the goat rest in power

This book can be summed up in two words: whale philosophy.

DID NOT FINISH: 57%

This was my third attempt and I got 60% through it. But I just can’t do it. It’s boring and too racist.

The story about Ahab and the whale: 3.5-3.8

The social historical commentary on whaling and how that worked back in the day, the biological descriptions and commentary on science/depictions of creatures and general history. 4.5- maybe even a 5, but I'm biased having a background in natural science and also have had the honour to have met and had lectures from my country's most renowned whale expert!

This score just reflects the audiobook. The actual novel of Moby Dick is a 5/5.

One of my favorite books of all time. So many beautifully written chapters, historical references, well written characters, and humorous moments. Definitely some dry chapters here and there, especially when the whale hunting begins in ernest, but all the chapters written about people are absolute gems. The Pete Cross audiobook was fantastically narrated as well, and made the drier chapters fly by.
