This book is the foundational book to a larger story, mostly it just very slowly establishes the main characters back story, explores the world it's set in, and introduces the reader to the main players.
Definitely an interesting start to a series though there is little to no romantic scenes. It's more plot driven than romance, though i can see that there is a build in the relationship between Ronan and Piper.

Good premise, poor execution.

So, here’s the thing. It’s an easy read and the plot and concept is interesting enough to finish it through. However, the world building is really dull. You have a concept that could be so rich in description yet I have no idea what New Chicago is like. Piper, Nat and Ronan felt like empty husks and I just didn’t find them to be very compelling over believable. I feel like this book needed to be a lot longer, which is why I’m curious to read book two and give it another chance. This is a great story in theory, it just needs more life.

— 2,5 Stars

Set in an apocalyptic Chicago, Pip is a hunter, not just any hunter. She’s the best at her job, with the highest body count to date. She hunts supernaturals, but what happens when one hit doesn’t go exactly the way she planned?

Magic. Secrets. Mates?

I loved this book so much that when I hit around 73% I went to download the next book. Just to find out it doesn’t come out until January 7th, no matter, I’ve added it to my list and the day it comes out, well, I’ll probably binge.

Pip is a total bada**, I love her snarky and take no sh*ts attitude. The author did a fantastic job keeping Pip pretty consistent throughout the book, she’s a dick, but she owns it!

Nathalie is her new with sidekick, who for some reason insists on keeping Pip safe. An unlikely friendship kindles between the two and I can’t wait to find out how their relationship blossoms in the next book.

Ronan, ohhhhh Ronan. What a handsome devil you are.

I liked this new urban fantasy romance audiobook, Piper is a strong heroine and the world-building was very well done. She is a bounty hunter and finds herself with Ronan a very hot demon. The pacing was good, sometimes a bit slow and for others, it took a fast pace, the characters are interesting. I definitely will be looking forward to the next in the series. After reading other books from the author I think this series is the best of her yet, still need to get more to see how the story goes but I am liking it so far, even after a cliffy. The narrators Savannah Gilmore and Adam Gold did a terrific job narrating it, I enjoyed it and would recommend giving it a go.

Piper is an as*hole

But in the best way, after learning about her past I can understand why. The book is well written and a quick read. I'm excited to see what twists come their way in the next book.

Piper is a really strong heroine who is struggling with self-acceptance and trusting others. The post-Magic Wars world is compelling and there's just enough background to make sure you can follow what's happening. The majority of the story centers around Piper and Natalie. It's refreshing to read a story that's got a strong female friendship at the core. I did wish for more Ronan but I am guessing we'll get plenty more of him in subsequent books. The balance of mystery and reveals were well done and never did I get frustrated with the uncertainty. There were also plenty of new mysteries added so that things didn't get boring. Some moments throughout were slower than others but the pacing was pretty good. It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger but in a way that just sets up the premise of the next book.

There are some romantic elements throughout but I wouldn't label this as a paranormal romance; it's more of an Urban Fantasy with some dystopian thrown in.

I loved Savannah Gilmore's narrating. Her voice is lovely and I especially liked how she did Ronan's voice. I liked the male narrator too but wasn't a fan of his female voice.

Overall, I am excited to continue reading Piper's story and can't wait for her and Ronan to finally get together! Good start to a new series.

I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
