Little distracted while listening to this book so it was a little stop start for me. I found the storyline interesting and it was a nice introduction to the characters. Strong leading lady, interested to see where this series goes. Ended with cliffhanger,spice lvl low (nil) narrators ok. Jumping straight into the next audiobook.

Magic became known a decade ago and then there was a war. Tons have people have magic and those who don't, want it. Piper Fallon calls herself human, but clearly isn't. There is a backstory that we don't get until far into the book, but it is hinted at. Piper hunts down supernatural creatures for money and lives paycheck to paycheck.
She takes a job of killing an entire coven of witches who are trying to summon a demon because it pays well. But little does she know the witch in charge is the man who can break the spell on her little sister. So she doesn't kill him and the coven summons a demon named Ronan who then fixated on Piper herself because else is his atma or soul mate.
Piper also ends up with one of the witches from said coven, Nathalie, switching sides and partnering up with her. Nathalie has strange magic and has been rejected by her family.
The plot is a bit complicated and definitely dark, Piper is pretty badass and Nat eventually shows herself to also be. Nothing is resolves really at all though so you have to continue the series to have any closer. Also Lucifer shows himself and figures out Piper smells like his atma because she killed the demon. It's very confusing.
I'm going with a 3 star on this because I could take it or leave it. Mostly it's an interesting research book because I am reading everything I can that is out there on angels and demons in the urban fantasy genre, but I don't feel like I need to read anymore of this series.

I really love Piper’s drive; she does everything possible to help her sister and to survive. She meets Natalie by kidnapping her. Natalie is someone who has been turned out of her coven, her family turned their backs on her, yet she decides to be Piper's right hand. I love how they wear each other down into a sort of tenuous friendship. Ronan is summoned by a coven and once he sees Piper he knows that she is his mate. From that moment, he doesn’t leave her alone and I love how relentless and playful he is, especially in their dreams together. I’m so excited to continue book 2 because so much is going on with her demon boss, Lucifer, and I need to know what happened.
