Enjoyable read and good set up novel for the series. I found small sections a little too verbose which sometimes brought the quick pace to a crashing stop but that would be my only complaint and I'm hoping that's just partly down to this being a scene setter first novel in the series. Looking forward to book 2.

The misogyny, fat-phobia, and horniness was very off-putting. I wanted to DNF this book, but it was for book club so I didn't.

I think the premise had a lot of potential, and I did enjoy some aspects of the storyline, but it was not executed well.

I would absolutely love a book (not by this author) from the perspective of Mother Thames, or one her tributaries, though!

I really liked this book! The world building was super fun (especially the rivers), I really enjoyed Peter as a protagonist, the supporting characters were really interesting and the audiobook was really well produced.

The fly in the ointment for me (and probably why this was 4 instead of 5 stars) was that I was getting a literary version of "Would this pass the Bechdel test?" because almost all the female characters seemed defined by their sexual relationships/availability/lack of availability to various male characters. Clearly after reading mainly women authors for several months, going back to male portrayals of women is a bit of a shock to the system.

I liked the book enough though that I plan to continue the series and hope it gets better from that standpoint...🤞

This had promise, a supernatural force at the London police, investigating crime but man this wasn't great. Super slow and just kind of boring? Maybe better as a physical read but such a proling process for no reason as an audiobook.

A really good contemporary urban fantasy mash up of police investigation and supernatural thriller. It's dark, mysterious, exciting and funny. Nicely paced and plotted with some great twists that I didn't see coming. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series. Apparently there's a TV adaptation coming and I think it's perfect material for that.

The book is a lovely first person narrative full of dry humour. There are lots of wonderful pop culture references, some of them so subtle that I'm sure must have missed others. All of the characters are great. Even the bit parts have quirks and attitudes and you can tell they have backstories and feel they live outside the book. Mother Thames and her daughters are awesome. What really shines through is the author's obvious love of London in every grimy detail.

I thought the opening was a little contrived but if you push through that it's well worth it. I guess the author needed to get his main character signed up before things really start going. Once you're a few chapters in, you can sit back and enjoy the ride.
