Insight into Parisian life but more importantly what her dreams were from a young age. How she navigated the humdrum of studies and wanting to write fiction is something compelling about the autobiography, as well as her teenage rebellion. I think what I remember most is her relationship with her childhood friend Zaza and how their friendship changed over their adolescence from childhood envy to something more mature and loving.

First volume of de Beauvoir's memoirs. Childhood, adolescence, and early development as a feminist and philosopher. On her relationship with Jean-Paul Sartre during their university years, circa 1929: "Whatever happened, I would have to try to preserve what was best in me: my love of personal freedom, my passion for life, my curiosity, my determination to be a writer. Not only did he give me encouragement but he also intended to give me active help in achieving this ambition."
