This boom is about communism! What? If she doesn't give everyone one of her colorful scales then she is shunned by her community!?!!? This book pisses me off.

I still love this story for what it says about friendship and sharing, but I disagree with the back of the book where it states that the Rainbow Fish has a heart of gold. He only starts sharing his beautiful shiny scales because he's lonely and after the octopus tells him to give away his scales, the Rainbow Fish says he couldn't do that. But when he is asked again about giving away a scale, he finally relents. It is only after giving away a scale that the Rainbow Fish realizes how good it feels to share and so he shares more and more scales.

"Give away all your shining scales. You won't be as beautiful, but you will have friends"

This was read to C in his pre-K class.
I am all for teaching kindness and sharing. This story is not the way to do it.
C loved this book, and has asked for it to go on his wish list. I would rather he didn't.
The sparkly shiny scales on the fish are pretty. Maybe I'll come back later and describe some of the reasons I hated this story.
