I both liked this book and struggled with the responsibilities placed on the children. It was as gentle as it could be, given their circumstances, but I felt this story might be appropriate as a YA. Even with the talking animals and statues, which I enjoyed. I'll probably go on to the sequel because I liked the cast of characters a lot. Good read for kids who like adventure and action, but sensitive children may need discussion.

An engaging start to what seems to be a promising series, I look forward to continuing.
