V. E. Shwab has done it again. She has swept me off my feet, taken me effortlessly on a journey, immersed me in a story I would have read in one sitting if I could have.
Gallant is beautiful. I truly am in love with Schwab's style, her writing keeps me tethered with every word. It doesn't matter that I am not an orphaned teenage girl who cannot speak, Olivia's story is compelling. It's complex and beautiful, full of mysteries and gifts; gifts Schwab makes to the reader by surprising them with beautiful, subtle mythology she has built for this story and this story alone. In my current reading world, most novels are part of a series and so Gallant stands out: a single, singular story, whispered like a secret through 300-and-something pages, left to keep close to the heart when it reaches its end.
For the last few years, I've reached for V. E. Schwab's books as soon as they make the shelves. Gallant certainly makes me want to reach for her stories again and again.

This book is pretty good, but it had a few flaws.  First, why did no one tell Olivia anything? It would have solved so many problems.  Second, why did Olivia go near the spooky door? That thing clearly has bad vibes! Overall, I found the plot to be too simplistic for my taste.  The side characters weren't really fleshed out, which dampened my enjoyment.  However, this book did the suspense very well.  Schwab also did a great job of portraying Olivia thought's and feelings.  A solid 4 star, but I am exited to read some of V.E. Schwab's other work!

I constantly thought the narrator was actually Neil Gaiman and that is the highest order of compliment I can bestow to a male narrator.

Rep: white asexual(?) mute cis female MC, white side characters.

CWs: Death, death of parent, blood, grief, animal death, abandonment, bullying, ableism, child death, suicide, gore, self harm, suicidal thoughts, violence, kidnapping, murder. Moderate: injury/injury detail, mental illness, body horror. Minor: alcoholism.

I gobbled this book up. I can't remember the last time I found a book where all I wanted to do in my free moments, no matter how short, was get in a few pages, where in the tense parts my eyes were racing over the pages almost faster than I could understand the words. It's a lovely, reflective little book. It's dark, but more in a Gothic way than a depressing way. Death is a major theme, but the persistence of our spirits and our connection with those we love beyond death is too, and definitely mitigates that. I wish it had resolved a little differently in some ways, but otherwise I really loved it.
