Scott really liked this one as did I. When a book encourages the reader to turn the orientation of the book based on what is happening to the little bird....I love that interaction!

I certainly understand why this won a Caldecott honor; it's a very clever book that entertains and educates! The pictures and the text are both effective, and together even better.

Caldecott Honor picture book. A clever printing trick has the reader turning pages bottom to top for half the book. And then flipping the book from bottom to top again to finish it. And of course Mel is a Kingfisher. Clever and fun if not very deep, with good enough art and fairly simple writing but not in a way that detracts. And the fish gets away which I suppose is okay.
