A tremendous piece of work. A visceral representation of occupation, violence and erasure.

It's a small but mighty book with shocking moments. Told in two parts, we witness gendered violence and stay a short while with lives disrupted and destroyed by Israel's crimes against humanity. Consuming this in a day, I just had to know how it would end. It kept me enthralled right to the last page.

I unfortunately could not stomach the first part of this book as the character is discussing his wounds in excruciating detail. I also did not realize that a rape occurs later on in the book, and I cannot handle that either.

I — what??? I sat riveted to this audiobook all morning, and then literally said, “what the fuck” when it ended the way it did. I’m having a difficult time rating this, which is usually the case for novella/short story works. But I’ll give this 5-stars because I could not put it down. It’s not a happy book. It’s story of two different people, on different sides of history. One is an Israeli soldier in 1949 and the other is a Palestinian woman born 25 years later. This whole story is just…. Maybe I’ll find some words later.
