At long last I can watch the films now haha. Honestly pretty good and very pacy I understand the hype. Didn't realise it is kind of about eugenics before reading but that bit was OK as well. Now the only question is will I tackle any of the many sequels... potentially?

I can't stand ellipses being used that much.

So this is the first book I started reading aside from academics. But, I completed a few others within the time I read it completely. It took more than a year to do this. Hated the experience at first, unable to understand anything for a few chapters, then I saw the movie again, it helped, then I decided to switch to the audiobook and I don't think I would've been able to finish it without the audiobook. Extremely excited to watch the film now. This would be a first time for me; reading the source material before watching the adaptation. I would not recommend anyone to read this, especially as their first book, but I can't explain how much it has helped me to "read". From understanding nothing and getting bored to now understanding nothing but not getting bored. It has been a good journey.

A good and solid sci-fi book,  but my gripe is more with the writing style. Oftentimes, Herbert writes in such a long-winded convoluted way and presents so much information, and yet none of it is clear. A lot of the time the prose was clunky and stilted with no natural flow. I had seen the movies prior to reading, which greatly aided in my understanding. There is a lot of worldbuilding and crucial info that is explained in later books apparently, but that leads to a lot of confusion upon reading this book. Will likely read Dune Messiah and stop there to finish Paul's story.

I had no idea what was going on more than half the time, but that's my problem. I should have watched the movie first but I wanted to be different so I wanted to read the book first. Is it bad I didn't know there was a war ongoing until like the very end ?

i really enjoyed this !!! personally i felt that it dragged a bit in the third part, but maybe that’s because i really liked reading about all of the houses and political moves in the first two parts. also, as someone who was born and raised in the desert (read a lot of this during a dust storm lol!!) i found myself agreeing with/understanding how the Fremen survive on Arrakis and relating to Chani the most. overall I enjoyed this and it gave me an even greater appreciation for the new movies!
