Kelly Corrigan and I are pretty similar-- white, straight, married, middle aged, two kids, not worried about grocery money. But based on what she reveals of herself in her books, we are very different in one major way: she is a feeler, and I am a thinker. I.e., she is someone who approaches life with her heart on her sleeve, while I hang back, analyzing and observing. So on the one hand, I enjoyed this book very much, but on the other hand, I kept wanting to tell her: for pity's sake, protect yourself a little bit. Don't go out there so wide open.

But on the other hand (that makes three hands?), she's enough of a thinker to write this book, and it is poignant and relevant and beautifully done. My small self wants to deduct a star for her flamboyance-of-heart, but that would be miserly, if you see what I mean. Great book that helped me understand how some of my more emotional friends think. I am envious of her openness.

p.s. can you tell I'm an Enneagram five? :-)

Enjoyed this more than I was expecting.  Liked the writing style and was great to hear in author’s voice.  Loved the excerpt of Andy’s Apollo 13 metaphor in his speech at Liz’ memorial.

Such authentic, heart-felt writing! Her stories about important things captivated me, often made me laugh, and gave me that feeling of not being alone in this world. Her stories sound like they are just her sitting there telling them personally to the reader, but in fact the writing is polished. A lot of work has gone into getting it said just right--at least it seems so to me.

Deeply resonated in a pure human emotional way - a celebration of the small ways to love, connect and appreciate each other as humans and thus, why it hurts so much to lose someone.

This was more grief-focused than I expected but overall a good listen, very “easy” writing style that felt like you were just sitting at the kitchen table with the author.

I was hoping that this would talk more about conversational techniques, but it was still a really enjoyable story. I hadn’t heard anything about this, and just came across it through my library. Her stories were thought provoking, most especially those regarding love and loss. The final chapters were a reminder that each day of life is truly a gift.
