This book was incredibly human. It angered me in ways I didn’t know books could and I oftentimes found myself forced to empathize with the focus of my anger. It never ceases to amaze me how selfish humans can be, but this book also showed how we can love and be loved regardless. There were parts that felt all too real and parts where my gut churned at the thought of turning the page. This book painted a complex and compelling picture of a dysfunctional family, riddled with generational trauma. Knowing that it is a memoir and based on someone’s real life only made it hit that much harder. First five star book of 2024!

It reads like a season of Shameless, it’s so sad. Over and over adults failed those kids. And yet they continued to have relationships with their parents. Families can be so complicated.

This made me so grateful for my life and everything I’ve had, wow. I’ve not really had any interest in nonfiction, but I’m really glad I decided to give this a try.
I absolutely loved her writing and story telling, so compelling and never boring. What an upbringing.
I’d say this is a must read.

While the story had the potential to be really interesting, the narrative style was dry and deadpan and ultimately failed to keep me engaged.
