I found this book to be boring. Cora Cash is a money ed heriess. Her parents take her to England to land a husband with a title. She finds one and this book is about her life with him and how English nobility plays more games than american wealthy people do. She is not sure of who is one her side and who is not. She leads a pretty loveless boring life.
I was sucked into this book from the getgo... I didn’t know through the twists and turns how it was going to end up. All I can say is that while the ending is probably quite probable, I have feelings about it. Good feelings? Bad feelings? I’m just not sure.
Nice light summer read. If you're looking for Downton, this is more upstairs than down. I wish there was more about the maid!
medium-paced

I wanted to like this after reading Victoria, but it was a bit of a mess. There were some significant inconsistencies (for example did the late duke die a year ago or three years ago) and the charactera didn't really finish developing. we jsut kind of hit an unsatisfactory ending where everyone just moved along. There were a few intriguing asides, but nothing was ever done with them sadly. I thought the maid character was really interesting (and only BIPOC character) but didn't get resolved. Good start, but I wish it had a bit more focus and the ending had been a bit more fleshed out. It felt a bit flat and inconsistent.
I flew through this! I’m in my Downton Abbey era right now and this was perfect to go along with it. The wealth, the gossip, the scandal! Supremely enjoyable.
If Henry James and Edith Wharton had a grandbaby that knew servants had lives too.
The book was well written, although it was slow to get into. There were definitely layers that were reminiscent of Upstairs/Downstairs, Downton Abbey, and The Buccaneers. I suppose that's what you get when you read another book about the same period of time. It was engaging and a fast read. I would recommend it if you like this time period and seeing the inside layers of the aristocracy.
omg. i. loved. this. book. it totally didn't end the way I expected and it was so well written. I had read Conseulo Vanderbilt Balsan's memoir prior to reading this and could see where she drew a lot of her material from. seriously. I loved this!
Meh. Not much of a contribution to literature, especially from a British author. But an easy, if predictable, read.
wish I could add a half star to make it 3 1/2. the clothing and jewelry descriptions from the early 20th century are so beautiful. really liked the story as well.
