3.3 AVERAGE

The American Heiress follows American socialite Cora Cash. The reader follows her life starting at Newport, Rhode Island and through her experiences being married to an Englishman with a title. A literary example of cash for class...

When I first read The American Heiress, it was near three years ago. I had checked it out from the library, and was done within the week. I had recently found the book for purchase within my budget, so of course, I bought it immediately. In my original reading, I thought it was engaging, and when I finished it, I felt like I lost a friend. Now that I finally own it, I'm re-reading it, and I can't wait to have tea and stroll the gardens with Cora again.

The reason I don't rate it 5 stars is because I felt overwhelmed with details (oddly), and the ending wasn't as satisfying as I was expecting it to be.

I loved this book! There were such powerful emotions in this and with Cora's character that made it such an amazing read. I love historical fiction and gut punching scenes so this combination has made me re-read this book multiple times. The romance was tricky at the beginning but ended perfectly.

Been enjoying the Gilded age on HBO so I am reading any books similar I could find. This was suggested and honestly, it should have been a DNF. The start of the book felt slightly promising, as I am a huge fan of Consuelo Vanderbilt and her tale, but the promise is lost as NOTHING happens. There are many times for a twist but this book I so predictable and honestly, boring.

I have been on a very very long reading hiatus and finally seem to have broken out of it. This took me forever to finish but as I kept picking it up I started to actually enjoy it and anticipate the next chapter. At the beginning I couldn't decide if I like any of the characters and by the end I really wanted to like them all but they were so spoiled and indulged I still didn't like them. I wanted Cora to run and Ivo only made me furious with his lack of communication and pouty ways. But I couldn't put it down and needed to see how it all turned out! It's nice to feel that again!

Utterly ridiculous but occasionally drew me in anyway.

This book severely frustrated me. I wanted so bad to like it! I was hoping unlike almost every historical fiction book about the Gilded Age heiresses that this one would be a happy ending, but you're just left wanting with no real ending in sight. As other reviews have said its a historical romance that's not historical enough for the Gilded Age history buffs, or romantic enough for those wanting a real romance. It was entertaining to a point, but the plot moved so slow and went on and on with neverending descriptions of the fashions, decor, etc. Overall I should have put it in my DNF pile but I was hoping the ending would make it better.
But seriously one half hearted apology that comes way too late and shes willing to stay with Ivo??? I was starting to hope his big apology would end with a cliffside suicide.

Entertaining but I can’t believe
SHE STAYS WITH IVO??!!!
But also Cora is a dumb bitch soooo

There was a lot I liked about this book. The look at the manners, the glittering decadence that masked boredom, the life was interesting. I thought the characters were a little flat - Cora too trusting, the villains too villainous, the duke too stoic. And then it just ended. No real resolution, just the book stopped because the pages ran out.

A fantastic guilty pleasure read, I breezed though Cora Cash's story. So what if the main character was a bit shallow, and her husband's secret was obvious? A good read for anyone missing Downton Abbey, as long as they miss the time period and not the wonderfully developed characters and plot.

I found this book to be pretty good. The juxtaposition between American life as an heiress and as an English duchess was interesting. I liked the writing style. It kept me emersed in this historical fictional world. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the fashion, the dinners, the parties, and the places it was set. I also enjoyed the different perspectives of the servants, and also loved to hate some of the supporting characters.
