I looked at this book a few times before purchasing because the synopsis seemed promising. A tale of a rich girl who is basically being shipped to England for marriage? Yeah, it caught my attention. Unfortunately the synopsis is the only good thing about this book. It's also the best written thing. This is one book that I wish I would have never bought. It is so dull. Cora, the main character, is absolutely one of the worst characters I've ever come across in literature. She made me want to gauge my eyes out when I read about her.

I hate Goodwin's writing style. It is mind-numbingly boring. I actually cried while trying to read this book. I put it away, thinking that I'd try to read it again, but I just picked it back up, and it's as terrible as I remember it.

I couldn't put it down. This delicious book had me in its clutches from start to end. I highly recommend picking it up and giving it a read.

I picked this up because it was recommended for fans of Downton Abbey, and I am certainly one of those. There were some moments in the book that were very interesting, and some decent twists, but a lot of it was sort of dull and a little mundane. Also I found Cora at times to be difficult to reconcile, she just seems so simple and naïve one minute, and then plotting and clever the next. On the whole, not a bad book but not necessarily one I'd recommend.

I thought this book was very interesting, particularly the time period and the difference between the American and English "ways." Would have loved the ending to be different though!

Boring ... very boring. Very little seemed to actually happen in this book.

I read this for the Vaginal Fantasy Book Club, January 2015. This was the alt pick to A Spear of Summer Grass by Deanna Raybourn. I found that I enjoyed this one SO MUCH BETTER than the main. I actually didn't want t his one to end, where as Summer Grass I couldn't wait to get to the end of.

The felt rather Downton Abbey. It also felt like a cross between general fiction and a romance novel. I loved it. I didn't love Cora at all, but I did feel for her in a lot of situations. In fact, I didn't particularly love any of the characters. Ivo was an ass and I didn't care for him either. I didn't even really like Bertha, to tell you the truth. But I loved reading this. I really disliked the names Ivo and Odo, though. For Odo, all I could think of was Rene Auberjonois and it really took me out of the story every time he was mentioned. Still, I was very pleased with this one on the whole.

not too bad. Lifestyles of the rich & famous are always amusing.

I enjoyed this book. Since Downtown Abbey is currently on and I am obsessed it probably caused me to enjoy the book more.

First, The American Heiress. I was completely engrossed in this book from page one and read nearly unrelentingly for three hours until I finished. It’s the embodiment of the guilty pleasure novel for me being full of period details, romance, scandal and obnoxious wealth. It’s the story of Cora Cash, a wealthy American girl, shipped from Newport, Rhode Island, to England to find herself a titled British man and some significant old-money real estate. It’s completely decadent and well-written besides. I can’t recommend a better book for your end-of-summer poolside/beachside reading fests.
