On the surface, Piglet is a story about the breakdown of a relationship in the days before a wedding. But this book is so much more than that. It explores the role that food plays in our relationships: how it can exemplify our love and care for others, denote class status, contribute to body image issues, and even heal our sense of self. I loved how visceral the depictions of food are in this one. Hazell uses food imagery to build tension as the novel builds to its climax.

My only complaint is that I do wish I had known going into it that this book is not truly about Piglet and Kit’s relationship, and Kit’s betrayal will never be revealed. It makes sense that Hazell chose not to center this betrayal so that readers are not tempted to judge the rightness of Piglet’s choices. But it would have helped to know that ahead of time.

Overall this is a fantastic book that offers a lot to chew on (pun intended).
