It's always difficult to review a book about the author's loss of a loved one and their personal journey with grief, so I'll try my best. I really wanted to love this book, but I felt like the book didn't establish itself well. The history of surfing that was told throughout the book was really interesting, but it felt like the book was more about the history of surfing and less about the author's loss and Kristen's life than anything else. Connections between the two storylines were tenuous at best.

Beautiful illustrations matched by an equally beautiful, yet heartbreaking story. I also appreciated weaving in the history of surfing.

Una lettura che porterò nel cuore per un po', per una serie di fattori: lo stile grafico, minimale ma così ben modulato che sembra di vedere le onde muoversi sulla carta, le due storie che si alternano e a volte s'incontrano, i colori utilizzati, la magia dell'oceano, la libertà e la prigionia della nostra natura.
Veramente commovente, in un punto mi son dovuta fermare per le lacrime agli occhi.

this book had me in tears by the ending, something that print books almost never do to me, but it was just so honest and emotional that it was hard not to be completely taken by it. the story of ‘in waves’ is subtle but it tells it so sweet and powerfully that it completely captures you. grief is such a massive, all-encompassing emotion, and to see it refined down so simply and on such beautiful, clean pages was both nostalgic and refreshing. thank you AJ Dungo for sharing your world and your love with us. <3

AJ Dungo’s graphic memoir “In Waves” is my favorite among the books I've book read for 2022. Not only is it a beautiful tribute to a loved one, but to me, his words and artwork gracefully captured the essence of blossoming love, the overwhelming grief of loss, a brief homage to the sport of surfing, and the importance of solace in nature. And, while I may not have experienced such a momentous loss, I have experienced similar feelings of isolation, loneliness, and heartbreak from the end of relationships.
It takes such courage to share with the world how one’s heart has been shattered to pieces, and then, to somehow figure out how to pick up those pieces, slowly bring them back together, and find a way to continue on with life..
Although definitely a tearjerker, “In Waves” is also inviting with its warm tones, alluring illustrations, and reminiscent for those of us that have a special connection with the beach, the ocean, and its compelling waves.
Thank you AJ for sharing with us a piece of your heart through your heartfelt words and incredible artwork. This book will forever remind me of the comfort, solace, and refuge I find with the ocean, to live life in its precious moments, and cherish the time we have with those we love most.
