This book is abysmal and not for readers who want a story about endearment or personal growth. True Crime is the story of a girl and her brother Lim, who, for all intents and purposes, I found far more intriguing than the character we are forced to follow through this story, who are both abused as children by their mother and father. We follow this sibling duo through the U.S's most rural and boring places as they murder and maim almost everyone they come into contact with. At 150 pages, this story is extremely quick and does pack quite a punch, but for me, it failed to deliver more than a general distaste for the main character and the actions taken by not only her but those around her.

This was depressing

After enduring unspeakable abuse at the hands of their mother, Suzy and her older brother Lim go on a murder spree starting with their mother.

First of all, trigger warnings across the board. This was hard to read at some points. The abuse suffered in this book is brutal. One thing I appreciate was that as brutal and unflinching as it is, it never felt gratuitous or violence for the sake of violence. There was purpose in showing what Suzy and her brother went through.

I loved the way this author told the story. Her writing, though it was about something so horrid and ugly, was beautiful. I was hooked from the beginning and really found myself invested in Suzy. She was written in such a way that I truly cared where she ended up.

More than anything, I feel like this is another look into how monsters/villains are made, not born. I enjoyed this dark journey the author took me on. It’s a short story but it packs a good punch.

Idk how to feel about this..

I knew this book was supposed to be brutal and intense, but I really didn't expect how emotional and poignant it was. Honestly, I'm super impressed by this and already have Waif on my shelf ready to read today.
