It doesn't always make for easy reading, what with the terrible treatment of protagonist Suzy and her brother Lim at the hands of their terribly abusive mother. But the writing by Kolesnik is fantastic. She manages to get into the head of her troubled main character and convey all of her most dark and violent thoughts, while also creating a great deal of sympathy for her. Suzy's voice is truly terrifying and feels so real. And some of the things she ponders, specifically about violence, seem to be both horrific and poetic at the same time. There are so many quotable passages throughout. It all makes for one hell of a debut novel and I can't wait to see what Kolesnik writes in the future.

I liked the first half a lot more. The 2nd half could’ve been shorter and I would’ve liked to see Suzy go off the deep end when Lim was announced to have died.

This is one of hell of a debut novella!

At the outset of this dark tale, Suzy and Lim manage to escape their traumatic childhood and abusive mother all at once. You’d think that they would seek peace after all the shit they’ve been through, but nope. The siblings proceed to go on a killing spree.

I knew this book was going to be messed up when I was appalled by what I was reading within’ the first 10 pages. I told myself, yep, this is going to be a wild and uncomfortable read. And it truly was.

The way that she developed these deeply disturbed characters (𝘡𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘨𝘩 𝘡𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 π˜₯𝘒𝘳𝘬 𝘒𝘯π˜₯ 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘡 𝘭𝘒𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘒𝘨𝘦) was masterful. My only complaint about this novella was that I was left wanting more once I reached the endβ€”which tells you how much I enjoyed it!

After reading this, of course I had to order her newest novella, 𝘞𝘒π˜ͺ𝘧.
