What book from your TBR do you keep putting off despite knowing that you’ll love it?
True Crime is one of many of mine. A book lauded by many of my favourite people around here, and it definitely lived up to the hype.
Suzy’s most precious items are her illicit issues of True Crime, tucked away where no one can find them. The broken bodies an escape from the violence she endures at the hands of her mother, as a plaything for her and her boyfriends.
It’s no surprise when Suzy finally snaps. Walking in on the scene her brother Lim knows their only hope is to flee, starting a journey absolutely soaked in blood. Two wounded people inflicting pain on anyone who gets in their way.
A powerful story about extreme trauma and abuse and the delicate line victims walk between protector and perpetrator. It’s a tough read but hard to put down.
This novella runs with a cadence unlike most fiction and paints a gritty picture in short, hectic strokes. Poetic at times and blunt, I’ll certainly review this on Typical Books. A very visual and dark story from the killer’s point-of-view - I enjoyed this very much, thought it ends too soon.

I found this weirdly refreshing with having a young woman serial killer and being in her thoughts and rationalizations. It's an actual interesting character study and a different take on the effects of trauma.
I don't want to give away anything but there are content warnings of all types so just message me if you want to know specifics, just in case. Again, this is a horror story that goes deeper than the typical graphic scenes just to shock the reader, it somehow makes me sort of root for the "bad guys" or empathize with them.
4/5
Kolesnik did such a good job in crafting a character that is both the victim and the perpetrator. You might wonder if that is a manageable combo, but it definitely was in this case. I had a lot of mixed emotions while reading these 109 pages. I even took a break from it for a minute, because it pained me so much to read about Suzy and her childhood.
I do wish the book would’ve been a bit longer, but that’s just a personal preference.
