"Who cares what happens to the meat after it's off the bone?"

What book from your TBR do you keep putting off despite knowing that you’ll love it?

True Crime is one of many of mine. A book lauded by many of my favourite people around here, and it definitely lived up to the hype.

Suzy’s most precious items are her illicit issues of True Crime, tucked away where no one can find them. The broken bodies an escape from the violence she endures at the hands of her mother, as a plaything for her and her boyfriends.

It’s no surprise when Suzy finally snaps. Walking in on the scene her brother Lim knows their only hope is to flee, starting a journey absolutely soaked in blood. Two wounded people inflicting pain on anyone who gets in their way.

A powerful story about extreme trauma and abuse and the delicate line victims walk between protector and perpetrator. It’s a tough read but hard to put down.

In line with Zombie and Cashtown Corners

This novella runs with a cadence unlike most fiction and paints a gritty picture in short, hectic strokes. Poetic at times and blunt, I’ll certainly review this on Typical Books. A very visual and dark story from the killer’s point-of-view - I enjoyed this very much, thought it ends too soon.

A brother and sister escape from their abusive mother and set off on a roadtrip of murder. This is a bleak and brutal character study exploring how Suzy is shaped by her upbringing and how her future begins to unfold. At times both unsettling and heartbreaking, I thought this was an excellent read and I look forward to reading more by this author.

This book is incredibly short and long at the same time. It's a story of abuse, rape and pain. The main character Suzy felt real in her struggle, not made up by someone in their cozy room at home. Beautiful and raw, wow.
But..at the end I wasn't really connected to the story because the amount of violence constantly threw me off, it seemed more like a shiny accessory to the plot. Honestly, we could've gotten to the point of the story without half of it. Also...the marketing of this book? Why portray it as a true crime story? Doesn't make sense to me.
Not a bad book, probably just not for me.

TRUE CRIME is a crazy story about a girl and her brother going on a road trip and killing people.

I found this weirdly refreshing with having a young woman serial killer and being in her thoughts and rationalizations. It's an actual interesting character study and a different take on the effects of trauma.

I don't want to give away anything but there are content warnings of all types so just message me if you want to know specifics, just in case. Again, this is a horror story that goes deeper than the typical graphic scenes just to shock the reader, it somehow makes me sort of root for the "bad guys" or empathize with them.

4/5

“True Crime” by Samantha Kolesnik is a short, but brutal read. If you’re looking for any good feels while reading a book, this is not for you. There are a lot of triggers in this novella, such as molestation, and child and animal abuse. It definitely isn’t for the faint of heart. With all that being said, it is a powerful story that will leave you feeling both empathetic and disgusted with the protagonist.

Kolesnik did such a good job in crafting a character that is both the victim and the perpetrator. You might wonder if that is a manageable combo, but it definitely was in this case. I had a lot of mixed emotions while reading these 109 pages. I even took a break from it for a minute, because it pained me so much to read about Suzy and her childhood.

I do wish the book would’ve been a bit longer, but that’s just a personal preference.
