"I was the black sheep, the sheep with teeth, the sheep even the wolf wouldn't eat."
This review is so incredibly hard for me to write. This book was BRUTAL but also beautiful. Kolesnik was born to be a writer; I am in awe that this is her first book. She writes with such directness, but there were also quite a few lines that, while simple, were profoundly gorgeous. There were so many parts that were VERY difficult for me to read (which is literally the only reason I am rating it 4/5 stars). The molestation scenes (which are aplenty) and the animal abuse just left me so shaken up, horrified, and disturbed. I finished this book last night, and I am still thinking about and feeling it. The story of Suzy and Lim hits HARD, so be prepared.
I am always fascinated about what makes a killer a killer....what makes some individuals go from sweet, innocent children to a full on monsters. I think that is one reason I couldn't put this book down. You'll be so angered by Suzy and Lim's murderous spree, but your heart will also ache for them because you'll see that the abuse and horrors that were an everyday part of their childhoods shaped and molded them into what they became. You will be so conflicted and unsure how to feel. Suzy is truly a broken character, in EVERY sense of the word. She's been broken by everyone she has ever come to know, in one way or another.
I don't want to give away too much of this story, but I'll just assure you that, if you read this, the story will not be soon forgotten. It will stick with you. I would totally recommend this for someone with thick skin, for someone who is not faint hearted. Kolesnik paints a picture of the most disgusting and heinous parts of our society, but she does it in such a way that you will find horrifying beauty in her words.
**A huge thank you to the author for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.**

I felt the beginning of the book was great and it hooked me from the first page, but it became boring toward the middle and end. It felt disjointed and sort of rushed near the end, and also very predictable. I felt the author could have added more details. The start was strong, but the end lacked.
Graphic: Child abuse, Physical abuse, Sexual assault
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Death, Murder
Minor: Kidnapping
