“Any time I tried to talk to God, it just sounded like my own thoughts. Perhaps the part of my brain meant for talking with God was broken or deformed. Maybe when God created me, he disliked his creation and turned off the part connecting me to him, like an artist who didn’t want to sign a bad painting.”
Two siblings endure abuse from their parents and then go on a road trip murdering spree beginning with their mom. Your coming of age story gone wrong. This novella was short, brutal, and devoured in one sitting. If a person is abused enough, can you blame them for snapping? Watch as our leading lady spirals into madness in less than 100 pages.
Recently one of my favorite genres has been unhinged ladies and this book fits right in. It’s the perfect horror novella to get you in the mood for all things spooky this Halloween! It’s extremely dark so it’s not for the faint of heart. Enjoy at your own risk!

This was an incredible read. I think about it all the time and it’s been years since I first experienced
it. It’s a shame taken a step back from the public eye but she’s incredibly talented and I hope she can someday safely and comfortably come back to it.

Todos los personajes eran tan horrible no habia ni una persona que fuera normal. Demasiada violencia sexual for shock value ya que no impactaba a la historia en nada (solo la inicial tenia impacto)
By far one of the most effective books I’ve read so far. And one of my favourites. It stuck with me days after reading it. I loved the way it was written and I couldn’t put it down.

Está cortita pero potente, no tanto por lo que sucede en la historia, que de todos modos está lleno de violencia, pero por lo que se puede leer entre líneas.
This is not a easy read. It deals with child abuse, rape, animal cruelty, and death. It is incredibly well written, and for that reason I can see why it's recommend often. I prefer my horror to be more on the fun side, but if you want a book to get in your head and ruin your day a little, check this one out.

Years ago, I rated Kolesnik's "Waif" five stars, and was disappointed when I learned I was too late to grabbing a copy of "True Crime". I'm glad it has been republished, as I've wanted to read this for a long time. I've been considering how I feel after reading it though, and have some mixed opinions.
This is definitely a deep dive into brutal trauma. If you're someone who needs to check trigger warnings, please do so as this has them all. It's heartbreaking, devestating, and hard to watch Suzy descend into a downard spiral. I do feel like there was a lack of character development in this, but I found that the second half was easier to connect with Suzy.
None of the violence felt out of place or like it was just there to shock you - it has a purpose. I feel like the pacing, perhaps, could have been better. I've been trying to put my finger on what it is, but I feel like something is missing that could have easily brought up my rating of this novella.
This is a dark, gritty, brutal descent into the madness that trauma can bring upon a person. I wish I enjoyed it a little more - it has lots of potential, but didn't hit the mark in a few areas for me. I do feel like Kolesnik's writing has strengthened since this was released, as Waif addresses all of the things I had issues with.
It's quite a depressing read, and I do recommend being in a good head space before entering into the world of Suzy's mind. I look forward to reading more of the author's work as she releases more novels/novellas!

The cover is slightly misleading, but the fantastic design is what led me to pick up the book. I'm glad I did, and I'm not. This is a strange one, and the comparisons to The Girl Next Door have to be made. The writing itself is brilliant, the story heartbreaking and simultaneously hard to look away from and hard to keep going. It's a character study in trauma. It doesn't claim every victim of trauma will end up like the main character, but this one did. And this is her story, no one else's. I almost stopped reading when it came to Moses, those things always hit a little different for me. But I needed to know what happened to Suzy, so I kept going. I wanted her to thrive, to heal, and to find worth in herself besides the price others claimed her to be. But sometimes healing doesn't happen. Sometimes, we are broken beyond repair. And sometimes, the demons inside us win.
