This was younger than I thought it’d be, but I really enjoyed it! It’s fast-paced, tense and fun. The only thing is that I felt like it was a little far-fetched at times and I didn’t quite have enough time with the characters (possibly because there’s so many of them) to feel quite as connected to them, or behind them in their story.
Five very unique but outcast children have been labelled 'unadoptable' by the manager of the orphanage where they were all abandoned as babies. When this unscrupulous woman tries to sell the children they run away and embark on an adventure that will test them all. Will they each find the family they are looking for?
Milou is the main focus of this book and I do love her even if she is a little single minded sometimes. She does come to realise the value of the family she has even if it may not be exactly what she had been dreaming of. Each of the children have wonderfully individual personalities and I adored them all, Lotta is a genius child, Fenna is a quiet kind soul, Sem is dedicated and caring and Egg is clever and brave. The plot was well thought through and gripped me all the way through, I saw a couple of things coming but there were still some good surprises too.
I definitely recommend for anybody who wants a fun middle grade adventure story with some truly lovely characters.
I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

OMG people! I mean this was set in 2020! So get over it! No offense. But If you dont feel comfortable maybe just ignore it because yo9u are driving people away form this book. I understand how it co9uld be a difficult concept but its VERY frustrating to see people who didnt even read it, posting bad reviews!!!
A simply beautiful book which examines what it means to have a family.

I got the audiobook of this after seeing it mentioned (I think on Twitter) and without knowing much about it. The narrator is Gemma Whelan and does a fabulous job. A lovely bonus is that it's set in Amsterdam and has lots of words in Dutch, which we are all learning now we live in Flanders. So I know that the narrator's pronunciation isn't always right but it's a lovely feature for our family and I'll be recommending this to my kids. The story is the kind of found family with 5 unusual orphans that I always enjoy. The plot has a few twists and turns that made it more unpredictable for a MG book. Magical powers, story, friendship, mystery, puppet shows and adventure.
