To be honest, this reminds me much of the great mouse detective. If of course, Lenox was basil and lived on Baker Street. It's a bit like Sherlock Holmes, without being too intense or suspenseful. It may not be the literary work of the century, but I don't usually read who-dun-it's and I enjoyed this one thoroughly.

Trying very hard to be Sherlock Holmes, and failing. Somewhat interesting, but no real depth. Just a quick read.

Pretty par for the course. Unlikely to pursue the rest of the series.

Beautifully written classic British mystery novel. The hero is a gentleman. There is a tasteful romantic undertone. Add a side kick with a medical degree and a faithful servant, and you have the future of british mystery novels! And don't forget a very well written plot... Charles Finch will keep the legacy alive!

A marvelous cozy mystery, with a charming new take on the independently wealthy Victorian private investigator. The nods to Sherlock Holmes make the sharp contrasts between Holmes and Lennox appear deliberate and delightful. Lennox, friendly, fully fleshed-out, and knowable, is also accompanied by a doctor friend, and both have flaws and pasts. Lennox’s elder brother is even a politician, but makes a perfect foil for Sherlock Holmes’s brother. Regardless of your familiarity with Holmes, however, the mystery stands on its own. Delightfully complex, without being too difficult to follow, and traversing the breadth and depth of London, each scene and character comes brightly to life.

It was all a little too proper for me. It felt like a bad game of Clue. Was it the maid in the drawing room with a candle stick? I guess I just need a little more grit in my mysteries. This one was not for me.

I suspected I wasn’t in the mood for a male voice and when it turned out to be an annoying rich aristocratic male voice, I was out.

This book was gifted to me through a goodreads contest. I'm so glad I picked this book up! I loved meeting these characters. The setting is right up my alley....love when Lenox ponders things by the fire. Lady Jane is lovely and the pace of the story is just right. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
