I don't think Harry Potter is really groundbreaking, but it's a good, solid story and damn can J.K. Rowling write a tight plot! Her prose is rather pedestrian, but that's of little consequence. The world is fun to read about (and witches and wizards really aren't any better off than us muggles), and the characters are likable. Harry get annoying in some of the later books, but he gets over it when the time comes to kick some evil in the bum. My favorite characters, though, are Snape, Neville and Luna. Neville especially exhibits great growth through the course of the series.
