This is the kind of mystery book where you have hundreds of pages to go but the big twist is so obvious and you feel like you could just stop there. I regret finishing the book.

I had some difficulty getting through this book. I felt like it dragged on and was very slow moving. Maybe the characters didn't quite capture my attention. I was close to putting the book down halfway but I struggled through it. I would say that the story picked up about 3/4 of the way through with all the twists the story did take.

Enjoyed Claire Foy’s narration, her talent as an actress really shone with the variation of voices she was able to use for all the characters. The story took me about 50% through the listen to be really engaged with it, overall being a bit long. It ended up having some good plot lines thrown for a loop near the end and a good underlying message of family love and grief.

I love Kate Morton's writing.
She seamlessly blends mystery and intrigue with the joy and complexity of every day life, jumping between timelines and perspectives with ease.
This book is about the stories we tell about ourselves, about others, the meaning of family and home, yearning for truth and closure, and more.
The magic of Australia came alive in these pages and it makes me feel I know everyone quite well. Loved it.

Morton's writing was beautiful but the pacing sometimes struggled. This family mystery had a lot of twists I didn't expect, though I did guess that the babies were switched pretty early on. For such a long book, I expected more nuance to the narrative characters, but they felt like the flattest ones, telling the story about the dynamic characters, which was an odd choice. I usually love intertextuality, but this time it often felt overly convenient for plot purposes - why wouldn't she read the book all at once? Why did she get three copies but not...just read it? And why doesn't anyone care that the homeowner/husband figure never comes back?

This was a delicious read. So many plot turns and layers. I felt like I was in South Australia. The book is on the longer side but I don’t mind a slow build
