DID NOT FINISH: 48%

This is a story told in two parts. The first part is in 1959 in Adelaide Australia when a family is killed seemingly by the mother who poisoned them all. Only a baby is missing then several years later they find the baby buried in the garden of the house. The sister-in-law, Nora has been staying with the family and all this happens. She gives birth to a baby named Paulie. But then she goes back to her home. The other half of the story is told in today when Jess who is the daughter Holly goes back home to Australia when her grandmother Nora get sick. Nora helped to raise her and she misses her dearly. Father just discovers the story of her great uncles family who died and tried to unravel it. She's also dealing with her estrangement from her mother polly. Jess always believed that Polly left her with Nora but in truth Nora controlled Holly into leaving her there. The story also tells that in 1959 that family was not as perfect as it seemed. The father was away on business in Europe and the mother had been having an affair. She's been sleeping with someone and became pregnant by them. the book lead you to believe that it's the caretaker but in actuality it's the shopkeeper who ends up finding them all dead. That shopkeeper is happily married to Meg and his two sons. Meg knows that he has been having an affair and so does her son marcus. One day Marcus brings a puffer fish which is poisonous home and says he was going to give it to the family to die and Meg scolds him, however she goes and makes fish paste and gives it to the family. She intends that the mother will eat it alone but in fact the whole family does eat it. Meanwhile you find out that the sun Marcus had gone back and found the baby still alive and brought the baby to his mother. Meg and her husband had been hiding the baby for a few days when the husband discovers that he can give the baby to Nora. This works out perfectly for Nora because while her baby was born slightly premature because of all this drama the baby didn't survive. She had been pretending around town that the baby was fine. So she takes her niece and raises her as her own. This is Polly, Jess's mother. This is a good story it is a bit long in parts but the prose is beautiful.
