I always love Kate Morton - how she weaves the present day and past together to slowly mete out the mystery. I felt this was going one way only to be turned around a couple times. I was not completely satisfied by the ending but that was perhaps because I didn’t want the book to end and wanted to follow the characters further into the future.

I’ve been waiting to read this one at Christmas and finally got my shot! I started reading it and switched to the audiobook about halfway through (mostly because I got a different hardback to read, and this became available), and both were good. The audio added accents, which I always enjoy, but there was great suspense in simply reading it as well. Regardless, despite being a pretty long book, I was wrapped up in it almost immediately and really enjoyed Morton’s ability to develop and alter our perception of characters as the story unfolded. A horrific tale of a Christmas Eve crime that changed a town and *at least* two families’ lives forever. At the same time, it brought unexpected wholesome themes of family, the bonds of bibliophiles, and, of course, the meaning of “home” for so many of the characters.

First off, a big 5 stars for Claire Foy. What a wonderful narration!

Called home to care for her grandmother after a fall, Jess, a journalist, discovers a book chronicling the police investigation into an old unsolved murder that has a shocking connection to her family.

I love Kate Morton's novels - her blend of grand homes, nature, characters, and a central mystery is atmospheric and satisfying. And while I liked this book, I felt some story threads were incomplete or sloppy. Also, it could have used additional editing - especially with the 'book within a book' element.

To be swept away in Kate Morton's storytelling is a treat.

My favorite books are still The Secret Keeper and The Lake House
