Power of Geography explores geopolitics and the modern power stage, examining the way that geography has shaped histories, relationships, and economics in countries such as Turkey, the UK, and the Sahel as well as projections for how these countries will continue to play a role in the future realities of our world. I was impressed by how Marshall was able to make complex and detailed information accessible in this book. There is a lot of information in this book, and I felt engaged with the text and as though I was learning something in every chapter.

There were issues with the writing - Marshall is a white British journalist, and there were definitely moments in the book where you could feel the authors unconscious bias coming through the writing. I wish some of the chapters on Middle Eastern countries would have involved more of the critical engagement shown when he was writing about, for example, Britain and Spain. I also felt that some of the personal anecdotes used in the chapters completely failed to engage with the wider issues Marshall was talking about - centring himself and his experience in a story about reporting on conflicts in Syria for example, and completely missing the chance to acknowledge the stories of residents and refugee's.

Despite this, Marshall's writing is a good stepping point into the world of geopolitics and an astute entrance to a fascinating and relevant subject.
