To copy what I heard on Tik tok, “it’s like game of thrones, but more lesbians” (and much better writing IMO).

Overall, I enjoyed the Priory of the Orange Tree. The world building was new and interesting, and I loved the diverse cast of LGBTQ+ characters.

My only complaint is that the initial introduction to each POV took a little too long and almost made me quit. Once the plot kicked off, I was hooked. My other complaint is that there was 700 pages of world building and setup for less that 50 pages of actual climax. It felt a little anticlimactic after such a long journey only to have one chapter for the battle and a very fast conclusion.

Really loved the style of Shannon's writing. This was a great stand-alone fantasy (I really hope there's no sequel). I LOVED the different character arcs and the richness of the world-building. However, I do wish there was a better balance between the build-up and the actual reveals of key moments in the story. I felt there was soooo much build-up, but when it came to the actual reveals themselves, it was over in a few pages (for example Tané's final battle to become a rider)

The Priory of the Orange Tree is a classic fantasy epic, bringing adventure, power, love, loss, and a fierce fight for a better world together in this captivating novel. Told in four perspectives and across countries and regions—each with their own rich histories, religions, and politics—Shannon’s novel displays a mastery of world-building few do. Within this world, you will fall in love with dynamic, complex, and charismatic characters, joining them on their adventures big and small as the overcome challenges to what they thought they knew of themselves and their world. Woven into this classic fantasy tale of magic, dragons, royalty, and fate are refreshingly strong, diverse, and multi-faceted heroines as well as queer love and loss. A mesmerizing novel, The Priory of the Orange Tree is fantasy at it’s finest and with a world and characters that will draw you in and not let go.
