Introvert and serious, pre-med student Mia and her best friend and roommate Heath love online gaming. Mia has her own blog all about it. When they become beta testers for the new online game 'Dragon Epoch' they get addicted fast. They make friends with other gamers, including the mysterious FallenOne who never shares his identity in real life even after months of in-game chats.
This is the backstory/prequel to the Gaming the System book: At Any Price.
I enjoyed reading about Mia and her friends and her growing relationship with Fallen. I am glad I read this before starting book 1 in the series.

I enjoyed it, there was a lot about the game the group was playing and that went over my head a little bit but it was still good.
I enjoyed this little prequel to the Gaming the System series. I liked the characters and the premise of them chatting/meeting to play RPGonline. A fun idea that has me jumping in to the rest of the series. Mia and her circumstances are setup so we can see where she goes from here.
DNF'ed after the first two chapters. I'd been clobbered over the head enough with how game developers are horney single men in their mom's basement living out their fantasies on screen and women are mistreated at every turn. I've played most of the games mentioned and have never once been victimized as a woman, and the skimpy clothes are a choice, not a requirement. I'm absolutely a feminist, but the road goes both ways, y'all. You can't demand equal treatment while name calling, pointing fingers, and treating others just as badly. Maybe the rest of the story was good, but it just immediately rubbed me the wrong way.
I started reading this in Brenna's newsletter, but after a few chapters decided I would wait and read the final polished version when it was published.
This book is a prequel to At Any Price, which was the first novel in her Gaming the System series. If you've read the series i encourage you to read this. I loved meeting Mia and Heath and being there when she meets FallenOne and Katya. You are with her through the period leading up to her med school exam and her mothers illness and see what helps drive her to the auction. I felt it really adds to the experience of the series.
If you haven't read her Gaming the System series, read Girl Geek and then run out to get At Any Price, after reading about Mia auctioning off her virginity and meeting her man, you will be hooked on this series like I was.

This was completely fine and serviceable as a prequel. But, to be honest, my heart was constantly craving more interaction between Mia and FallenOne. Their burgeoning friendship was just one of many subplots.
