was it the bruges or was it Hughes? a psychological portrayal of grief as reflected by the city filled with greyness comforting in its suffocation.

Loss—> Grief—> Obsession—> Madness
I’ve flirted with third base a couple of times maybe but thankfully retreated. Not so the hero of this book, he loses his shit. Bruges itself is the other great character here, its sad beauty and lifelessness constantly remind him of the event that shattered his mind. A city even the sea abandoned. This passage early on:
“Bruges was his dead wife. And his dead wife was Bruges. The two were united in a like destiny. It was Bruges-la-Morte, the dead town entombed in its stone quais, with the arteries of its canals cold once the great pulse of the sea had ceased beating in them.”
Damn. This book knocked me out. It’s a short read, I highly recommend it. It’s easily the best book I’ve read so far in 2025. OK I’ve only read 4 or 5 but it’s going to take some doing to knock it off that perch.

Burges-la-morte – Georges Rodenbach
Just like many books from this time and movement it’s just a little crazy. And at the same time the language is beautifully heart wrenching.
We follow the main character through his grief over his dead wife while it gets ripped open again by him meeting a new woman, and slowly but surely he starts to spiral and you find yourself worried about him but also the new woman. Because all the craziness can only end in one way: death. ☁️🪦⛪️
