The Leftover Woman

Catching up on my Book-Of-The-Month-Club backlog. I am not sure if the reveal in part 3 was supposed to be some sort of "major" twist, but I saw it coming from a mile away. Still felt invested in seeing how the conflicts would playout. Good middle-of-the-road blend of suspense and women's fiction.

Reading this book was very much like riding a roller coaster.

There are many facets to transnational adoption that I am not privy to, and I am sure my inner biases affected the way I interpreted the author's take on the subject matter.

Up until the halfway point of the story, I was almost sure I wouldn't rate this book anything above a three-star due to the fact that I felt the plot was predictable and there were certain tropes I didn't care for.

I am very happy to report that the ending was unexpected, and I found myself actually understanding the reason why these characters took the paths they did.

I went into this book with no expectations. I hadn't heard anyone talk about it. I think that was a good thing because I was under the impression this was a thriller. I didn't find it thrilling. However, I did find it incredibly emotional and heart breaking. I teared up at all the things this woman had to go through just for being a woman in China. It definitely tugged at my heart, especially having gone through the adoption process myself and knowing how scary it can be.

A solid read that I'd recommend.

Definitely gripping. The main characters inspire empathy but weren’t lovable, but maybe that wasn’t the point. Around the 70% mark the book got pretty predictable. In the audiobook, I thought the narration did a good job of communicating that
Jasmine is very intelligent but Rebecca is totally incapable of seeing past the culture gap
. The book opened up interesting questions about the ethics of adoption but I felt like they were still left as loose strings at the end. Maybe that’s the point.
