Audiobook. I was very interested to see where the story went but it just fell a little flat. The last 10% of the book has 50% of the story in it, ya know? A little story whiplash I think.
I found the issue of girls being born in China and the dynamics of that to be very thought provoking. I'm not sad that I spent time with this book, and I think my mind will flutter back to it periodically but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

The story had promise. The premise had the bones of an epic but petered out in the path of least resistance. Well imagined in parts and just moist in others but the plot does carry it to the end.

Honestly not sure if I read the same book as all these positive reviews. This book was slowwww and the perfect example of show don’t tell—except it was ALL tell. The characters were incredibly boring, the side story about Rebecca’s career was so unnecessary and added absolutely nothing to the story. The climax of the entire story was a single page.
But thanks for the ARC (my first!), Netgalley.

There’s not much that I can say without giving this book away except that it is the story of two very different women who share the love of one five-year-old girl.
