I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
3.5. This became predictable and doesn't have the thrilling oomph I expected from its description, but I still enjoyed the story (and especially how different cultural aspects play into the plot). There are several plot points that are not resolved or explored well, unfortunately, but it didn't detract from the readability. The characterization of Jasmine and Rebecca is also strong, though I found myself repelled by Rebecca's self-centeredness and thus ended up rooting for Jasmine and her wily perseverance.

I wish there was a way the plot would have been less obvious, it would have made for a far more juicier read.
Otherwise it was a an easy quick read

I couldn’t really wrap my head around the time this book took place in (some parts felt like early 1900s) and there were some overly dramatic plot points, but this was an interesting read and there was one surprise that I was shocked by.
Oof this is a tough one to review because the first 190 pages were plodding and slow but the last 80 pages were lyrical and lovely but also felt cut short and the ending abrupt. Definitely a lot to unpack here about the casualties of the Chinese one child policy and generational impacts of adoption.
A beautifully written book, couldn’t put it down. fastest I have ever read a book.

dnf @ 20% - excessively melodramatic with sluggish pacing. found it difficult to care about either protagonist
Felt a little predictable but there were some fun twists and turns. I loved the ending! Would definitely recommend.
