It was fun to read a historical fiction centered around Ellis Island and I found it quite engaging.

I know next to nothing about the history of Ellis island beyond that it was a gateway for immigrants in the early 1900s. I enjoyed the weaving of the two main women’s storylines while simultaneously learning about some of the realities of immigration at that time. It was an enjoyable read.

Thanks to sourcebooks for a copy of this book to review.

A really good read

This was a wonderfully small glimpse into the workings of Ellis island. It really gives you a sense of what the poor immigrants went through in wanting a better life. I enjoyed the book a great deal.

Francesca is an immigrant to the United States from Italy. She and her sister arrive at Ellis Island searching for a better life on the same day that Alma, a young German-American woman, arrives to begin her first day as a matron; assisting the immigrants as they are processed, detained and/or returned to their home country.

The two women begin to navigate a system that is known to manipulate and take advantage of the desperate immigrants and they form an unlikely friendship.

Raises a lot of thought-provoking ideas.

One of the best historical fiction books I've ever read. I loved it so much!
