I enjoyed this story of Ellis Island and America in the early 1900's - interesting take on the immigration experience and life in the US at the time.

Very illuminating about the things that really went on at Ellis Island. I also didn’t realize how much hatred there was for different immigrant groups among the immigrants.
If you like historical fiction, you will like this book. I would recommend

This read sheds a lot of light on the immigrant experience. It is shocking to learn the corruption that occurred at the expense of those arriving in our country to find refuge from their hardships.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Francesca Ricci and her sister, Maria, have fled their homeland, Italy, to escape the abuse they have suffered at their father’s hand. After days at sea, Maria is ill when they finally arrive at Ellis Island. Their experiences there are traumatic and life-changing.
Alma Brauer is the eldest daughter of a large family. Her stepfather resents that she is yet unmarried at twenty-one. He decides that she needs a job outside of the home and so Alma begins to work on Ellis Island. She is confronted there daily by the never-ending stream of poverty-stricken immigrants. She and Francesca cross paths and find that despite the many differences in their lives, they have much in common, and bond is formed between them.

I liked the story of immigration through Ellis Island being told through the perspectives of both women. It really painted the picture of the harsh reality that America might not be everything they dreamed of but still better than what they were leaving. The main characters both showed so much strength in their own ways and I like that they were able to help each other get justice in the end.

The Next Ship Home gives an in-depth look at the dark side of Ellis Island. It wasn't always the safe haven gateway to the American dream we learned about in school. My own great grandparents came through in the 1920s so I am always interested to learn more about the immigrant experience at different times throughout history. This book does not sugarcoat the shameful corruption and mistreatment, but it still manages to deliver a hopeful and engaging story. The main characters, Francesca and Alma, felt very authentic and I know their stories will stay with me for a long time. I'm looking forward to discussing The Next Ship Home with my book club!
