I had the honor of meeting the author at a library event and got to listen to her discuss the origins of this story. I was so enthralled with the story and couldn’t wait to read it.

This book did not disappoint! The characters were so well drawn and how she managed to intertwine each character and all the amazing storylines was brilliant. The fact that much of the book was based on facts just made it all the more fascinating.

“You stand up for what is right, even if you risk losing everything”
“You make friends easily, I’m terrible at it”

This was a remarkable historical fiction novel, set in 1902 Ellis Island, beautifully written by Heather Webb.
Immigrants aren't the only ones who seek freedom in America.

I couldn't stop flipping the pages on this one and finished in two days. Two women, who are dissimilar to all on the outside, forge a bond that is stronger than family. Facing so many atrocities, they gave each other strength and hope as they trudged ahead in a world when women were still only viewed as whores.

There is nothing more powerful than a woman who is courageous, resilient and stands up for what is right.

In 1902, Francesca arrives at Ellis Island with her sister, while elsewhere on the island, Alma starts her first day at work on the island. The women's lives become intricately intertwined when Alma goes out of her way to ensure Francesca gets into America after the death of her sister.

I am slowly dipping my toes back into historical fiction after burning out on it. This was a well-told story that explains a dark part of history that not many know of. Francesca and Alma were great characters who embodied the strength women needed back then. Their friendship in this story is heartwarming and should be an integral part of any story.
