Goodness! I really, fully expected this to just be a light, easy (and probably cheesy) read. IT WAS SO MUCH MORE! I loved it. The pacing was amazing, the twists and turns were so good, Oakley kept me on my toes the ENTIRE! TIME! I don't have much else to write, because if anyone read this book from my review, I would hope they would go in as blind as I did. Little to know about the story other than what can be found in the blurb, and just buckle in for the ride!

Grief and hope ebb and flow in this story much like the waves lapping the shores of remote Frick Island. A story about how far we will go to comfort loved ones and the strange accommodations we make when faced with grief and loneliness.
Overall, this was an interesting story that piqued my curiosity. There was an air of mystery that kept me thinking about this story even when I wasn't reading. "There were more buried secrets on this island than on a sunken treasure ship . . ." (ch. 26) However, there were several cringe-worthy moments, such as the author's insulting choice to mock neurodivergent people with the phrase "Proud Father Tourette's" (ch.24).

I was very excited about this book, as I found the premise interesting. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a letdown. The characters were bland and the premise wandered around a lot. I also wish that we'd gotten a lot more substance to the whole "invisible husband" thing, seeing as it's the central point of the book, but it was barely explored. All in all, great idea, poor execution. By the end of it, I felt like it was merely an excuse to frame a lackluster romance.

Frick Island is light and breezy (despite focusing on grief as its central theme). The plot is wonderfully intriguing and the book progresses at a good pace. I’d recommend it as a one-time read but I don’t see myself going back to it over and over again.

I wanted this book to be as winsome and whimsical and quietly heartfelt as the premise suggested. A little Practical Magic, a little Evvie Drake, a little Stars Hollow but make it an island.
And it wasn’t a complete letdown. It just wasn’t all that. Am I asking too much? Perhaps.
It started off with promise - loved Frick Island, loved Piper and Tom’s love story, felt charmed by the quirky townspeople.
The thing is, I liked Piper and the Frick residents A LOT more than Anders. Anders didn’t deserve as much plot time as they did, in my opinion. I just didn’t care about him very much and he annoyed me, so the sections that zoomed in on him left me 🤷🏼♀️ and sometimes 😴. Needless to say I did not believe in the Anders and Piper romance.
So not a total loss, but not what dreams are made of. Read if you want to travel to a quirky Chesapeake island with hints of magic and a solid sense of community.
