I really wanted to love this book. It has an interesting premise, a well-fleshed out main character, and a beautiful setting, but in the end I felt it reached just shy of its ultimate slasher potential.

While I really enjoyed how real Jade felt as the protagonist, for someone not very boring, the story tended to drag on and on in parts, slowing down the momentum of the book drastically. Ranting turned into rambling, resulting in me finding myself wondering if I even knew what was going on anymore. There were multiple times reading this story where I double-checked previous pages to make sure I hadn’t simply missed something, but no, the story just lost its thread at times, feeling more like a non-fiction history of horror than a fiction novel. While I love horror and clearly so does Jade, these sequences could have easily been edited down and made for a much more intentionally told story.

I often found myself very bored up until just passed the 300 page mark. While I didn’t like the ending at all, the story did finally have some satisfying shock and awe moments toward it, so I wasn’t entirely let down. Was it worth the wait for the action? No. But the story itself aside from the slasher happenings was beautifully told and should have been leaned just a little more into to make this story hold more of an impact.

we all hope that if we ever do end up in a slasher that we would make it out. i can say for certain if i’m ever running from the knife of a killer, this book will have given me a 50 yard head start.

DNF @ 48%….I got very tired of the constant slasher references . I totally get it was proving a point of how obsessive our character was about horror and slashers, but point proven. I would love to check out different works by this author, but this one was not for me. It could also be that I was switching between Kindle and Audio? IDK but I am on to something else.
