  • Writing style seems to read like a diary entry or personal essay, wasn’t very descriptive at all
  • Had themes of mental health - depression
  • Had themes of finding oneself and closure and healing from difficult situations
  • People may not always be as they appear
  • Book was short but didn’t really like how they didn’t develop the side characters (Tomo and Takano)
  • Book didn’t really flow and felt choppy (like a journey entry)
  • Slow paced because there wasn’t much plot happening even though it was a short story

This book tugged at my heartstrings and I cannot wait to read the next one! To me, this book was all about understanding yourself, and what makes you feel content, despite nobody else being able to understand. It was about living a life that brings you joy, and finding comfort in the small things - books and coffee, rather than big dreams and milestones such as marriages and big promotions.  Each character felt as though they were on their own path to happiness and contentment - encouraged by those around them, and each goal and dream was merited and applauded. It felt like a much needed hug. Each character is slightly unconventional and quirky in their own way, and although they are all complex, you cannot help liking them all (aside from the nasty boyfriend at the start!)

I also enjoyed the settings enormously - the mountains, central Tokyo, the bookshop - and how each character learns from the environment within and from the environment around them.

i enjoyed reading this book. it was short and entertaining. sometimes the inner monologue vibes were off but i feel like that was a translation/cultural thing.
