Davi ist eine Heldin. So sagt es die Prophezeiung. Dass sie aber bei jedem missglückten Versuch ums Leben kommt und wieder von vorn beginnen muss, hat ihr niemand gesagt. Und so entschließt sie sich beim 237. Versuch, einen anderen Weg zu gehen: Vergessen ist das Heldentum, sie will der neue Dark Lord werden. Doch wie wird man böse ohne böse zu sein?
"How to become the Dark Lord and die trying" ist mein erster Fantasy-Roma von Django Wexler und er hat mich leider nicht überzeugen können. Die Geschichte klang nach Witz, Monstern und Spannung. Die Monster waren vorhanden. Bei Witz und Spannung konnte der Autor bei mir leider nicht punkten.
Die Geschichte wird von Davi höchstselbst erzählt. Und sie ist nicht nur eine prophezeite Heldin, sondern auch launisch, sarkastisch und sehr von sich selbst überzeugt. Ich mag durchaus Charaktere, die nicht in ein Raster passen und nicht nur positive Seiten haben oder einfach sind. Doch Davi schlägt hier über die Stränge. Sie weiß alles, sie kann alles und doch scheitert sie dann an einfachsten Dingen. Hinzu kommt, dass Django Wexler durch seine weibliche Hauptfigur so manche sexuelle Fantasie zum Leben erweckt. Ungeachtet der Situation und ob dies der Geschichte und / oder den Charakteren gut tut. Das war mir zu gewollt.
Die Story plätschert da eher im Hintergrund vor sich hin und zündet nicht vollends. Sie hat durchaus positive Aspekte und ich habe immer wieder gelacht. Doch insgesamt passten wir beide nicht gut zusammen. Schade!

I know that this isn't the first book so satirize the "Chosen One" trope but I think it's my favorite so far. Irreverent as hell, it pokes holes in the inflated over-seriousness that can take over fantasy, and then gives it a good shake for good measure.
Displaced human Davi always knew she was chosen for something big in the magical world she's been dropped into, but damned if she's figured it out yet. After her umpteenth time getting a redo of trying to save the world, she's beginning to wonder if maybe she's not meant to save it after all. Maybe, just maybe...she'd have better luck if she were on the other side. Cue the beginning of a truly grassroots, DIY tooth-and-nail scramble towards becoming the next Dark Lord---or bust.
Just a whole lot of fun with zero pretense, adventure, a wide range of fantastic (and funny) creatures/beasts of various kinds, and LGBTQIA+ representation.
