Clarity is Kim Harrington’s debut novel. Kim breaks into the awesome Young Adult world with a funny, sarcastic, heart-broken main character, Clarity, who comes from a family of psychics. Just by touching a something, Clare can see visions from the past. When a scandalous murder happens in her touristy hometown, she is recruited to help solve the murder. She works alongside her ex-boyfriend, Justin, that cheated on her, and a new-to-town hottie, Gabriel, that has a major problem with psychics.

Harrington has a really good grasp on what a sixteen-year-old would act like, feel, and think. I was humored by Clare’s running dialogue in her head about how she was so confused by Gabriel, how much she didn’t trust Justin, and how difficult it was for her to choose the right clothes. Clare had a huge secret to hide because her brother, Perry, was involved with the girl who was murdered. She wanted to make sure he didn’t get in trouble for a crime he didn’t commit so she frantically tries to find ways to use her psychic ability for clues.

Once I really got into the storyline of them finding the killer, I could.not.put.this.book.down. I tried to figure the plot out by all the clues we were given in the book, but Harrington did a great job of not making things too obvious. In the end, I was still really surprised by what happened. I love when I can’t figure out every detail!

I’m super excited for the companion novel coming out next March, Perception. It’s already on my to-read list.

3.5 stars

I liked the book, but it felt very one-dimensional. It just didn't have that extra oomph that would make you LOVE it. And considering the lack of 5-star ratings, it appears many other people would feel the same.

I felt like the characters could have been developed better and the end could have been less rushed. Also there just wasn't much depth to the story once you took out the god-awful young adult tropes: love triangle, player older brother, uninvolved parent(s), the "bad boy" who is supposedly tough but never does anything bad, etc.

It is a very plot driven book, which made it an easy read, not to mention its size. The plot was the main thing it had going for it BECAUSE IT WAS SO GRIPPING. It felt like something was always happening which was great.... except it made a few important scenes feel a bit too quick.

SpoilerThe one thing that made me cringe to a point where I just can't round this review up to four stars is the whole part where Clare was touching Cecile's dress & thinking her son was the killer. Yes, he happened to be one also, but Clare was SO STUPID to not realize the vision OF Stephen meant someone else was witnessing it. Common sense.

WHO DO I RECOMMEND IT TO?
•Anyone who likes the show "Psych" is going to cherish Clarity
•Anyone looking for a super fast paced summery book that has a touch of paranormality & is willing to overlook stereotypical YA tropes

This book was definitely interesting. With Clarity's original family background, it made for an interesting premise.

This murder mystery had both fantasy and a romantic triangle to give the book more life.

It definitely kept me turning the pages and to put it's sequel onto my to read list.

I think I first saw this book awhile back on a Goodreads giveaway or something. It sounded interesting enough, so I entered, and of course I didn't get it. But then I found it at Borders during the closeout sale so here we are. At first glance, I'm not big on the cover. It's too digital and fake, the girl isn't that good looking, and it doesn't tell you much about the story. I got past it. I enjoyed this book enough, it was really fast-paced and I read it in less than 24 hours, which is always fun, but it didn't make me think, it didn't make me question anything, it was just sort of a good read.

There are A LOT of characters to keep track of which got sort of hectic at times. There's Clarity, the main character (who is like Ben from the Touch series) she can see what's happened in a person's life by touching their objects. Her brother is Perry, who talks to dead people. Her mom can read minds. Her ex-boyfriend Justin is a skeeze, and I don't know why everyone in the book liked him so much. Her new hottie mchottie interest is Gabriel, seriously Gabriel even SOUNDS hotter than Justin, anyways, he's "bad news" because he's the new detective's son. Then there's Nate, Perry's best friend, and on and on and on. Yeah there are a lot of people to keep track of.

I don't really like when there are so many characters because it makes it really hard to focus on building a really deep set of intricate characters. Instead you end up with a million shallow characters who you don't really get close to. Either way, in 242 pages, how much character building can you really do?

The plot is pretty interesting, a tourist girl is murdered so Justin enlists Clarity (Clare for short) to touch things and help find out what happened to this girl. Oh yeah, Justin is the mayor's son.... Throughout her search plenty of weird things happen, more people die, yadda yadda, nothing we haven't heard of before. The end was a bit of a shocker, but I had sort of guessed who the killer was ahead of time so it wasn't a big "OMG" moment like I would have liked. There are just so many characters you sort of know it's going to be one of them. You can tell I'm really hung up on this too-many-characters thing huh? The ending was also pretty happy, another one of those "YA books have to have optimistic endings" decisions I guess.

Overall, the book was good enough, I enjoyed reading it, but I probably wouldn't read it again. It was quick, fun, intriguing, with the right amount of sexy, and I'd recommend it to anyone who just wants a fun read. Something "fluffy" :)

I liked it, but it wasn't my favorite. I will definitely read the sequel though. :) Review to come.

Clarity had me from the first Chapter, I mean how intense was that! And then by the second chapter, well Clare had me captivated. I absolutely loved her character. And I must admit, any novel that references the Peach Pit is on my automatic favorites list.

I think I expected this novel to revolve more around Clare's ability, but it was an excellent mix of mystery, paranormal, and romance. I have no complaints what-so-ever, well only that I want more!

This is easily one of my favorites debuts so far. Harrington does an excellent job drawing the reader in and never letting them go. And it wasn't just the constant question of 'who done it' that kept me turning the pages, it was Clare too. I wanted to know more about her and her family, she was a very likable protagonist and she really made this story. I read the entire novel in practically one setting, it was very simple to get sucked into the story and lose your surroundings.

The ending, while it ties up things nicely, still leaves us with the impression that there is a lot more to Clare's story and I can't wait to find out what it is.

Clarity is an impressive debut, it was everything I expected it to be and more. Add this one to your reading piles.... and move it to the top!

Wow! I'm speechless. Clarity was so much more than I expected and I'm still going over everything in my head. This is definitely a new favorite of mine.

Clarity "Clare" Fern knows she comes from a long line of freaks. She also knows that her freakish power entertains tourists. That's all she's ever really used it for. When a young tourist is murdered Clare finally finds another use for her talent. By helping the police find the killer she can not only prove the power of psychics but also get close to new boy in town, Gabriel. Oh and maybe try to stop hating her ex, Justin.

Clarity is amazing! I loved every aspect of this book. I don't even know where to start. I loved the characters and the writing but it was definitely the story itself that kept me reading. I loved the suspense! Clarity is a YA suspense done right!

Clare was awesome. She was strong, brave, smart, funny, and loyal. The perfect heroine, pretty much. This is the kind of girl teens need as a role model, not Bella Swan. Clare took control and I loved that about her but I also loved her vulnerable side. It was nice to see more than one part of her.

Overall, just go out and buy Clarity. Kim Harrington is one debut author I will be checking out in the future. I can't wait for the sequel to Clarity and whatever else she has planned!

Ms Harrington did the impossible. She made me like a cheating dog. I don't care whether or not you were too drunk, loser. THERE'S JUST NO EXCUSE and NO FORGIVENESS.

Anyway. Aside from that, this book was hard to put down. I liked Clary's character very much; she's spunky, independent and not shy even though she was an outcast. I liked everything about her...well, except when she forgave the cheating dog. But hey, when you've got feelings for someone, and take note, I didn't say love someone--those things just comes easy, yeah? The author also made it so that practically everyone was a suspect. I didn't have a concrete guess until there was only about ten pages left.

All in all, highly recommendable!

After being drowned in textbooks studying my heart away this was a needed relief. Clarity was a beautifully written mystery novel that propelled me to put off my science test. I literally couldn't put this one down. All the characters were layered with realistic details and scary secrets. The writing was beautifully done, and made all the characters blend with realistic relationships. Although I was at first concerned that the powers they had would ruin the mystery they didn't. The mystery was beautifully crafted to fit in perfectly with all the powers and spin the story with a fast paced plot with a crazy ending. Overall the writing was beautiful, the relationships realistic, and the mystery suspenseful. There was never a dull moment in the life of Clarity Fern which is why I advise anyone to read this book while I eagerly await for Perception to hit the stores in March 2012!
