Loved the Greek / Roman inspired mythology and vivid world. Gen lives up to his namesake.

I think I'm in the minority here, but I thought the book was just okay. Perhaps it's the writing style; I felt that the main character / narrator is too flat and emotionless. He was speaking in a monotone in my head almost the whole time! The fictional mythology created by the author also didn't captivate me in any way.

I hear that the rest of the series is better and I plan to find out for myself!

This book was a let down.
I think the storyline was quite dull. For the first 50%, the characters are literally just traveling - with zero action - to another country and our main character, Gen, just complains the entire time. Even the ‘exciting’ or ‘action’ scenes in this book were dull.

I think my main problem was how unlikable our main character was. He complains about everything, refuses to help anyone or with anything, purposefully riles up everyone around him then sulks when they get upset or prod back. I wanted to push him off him stupid horse after the 50,000 time he complained he was tired or hungry. I also wasn’t very impressed with his thievery skills.

The one good thing about this book was the myths, but those couldn’t save this book for me.

I think this is my third time reading/listening to this book. It's better upon rereading. This time, I'm hoping to make it through the entire series now that it's all finished.

After two years of sitting on my tbr shelf, I finally read this book, and it just didn't capture me like I wanted it to. I found the plot to be pretty boring, and I saw some things coming from the beginning, but even the twist that I did predict, I just didn't care about it. Unfortunately, I think my expectations were too high with this one, and I won't be continuing with the series (in general, I don't like to read a lot of series).

It's funny because I really liked this book up until the big reveal. It seems everyone else hated the first half and loved the end.
