I find this really hard to rate because.. can I complain about a fictional character with trauma?
I actually like seeing a MC that isn't the most strong bad ass character.
But.. I just got so annyoed at some point.
And like in a lot of this type of books I really don't understand the instant love.

Ugh this book frustrated me so ! It just doesn't make sense, how could he not find out who she was by now? All the money and power and he doesn't know his enemies children. Stop it
And why hasn't she talked to him yet soooo frustrating.

my favourite book
i first read this roughly 4 years ago and i’ve read it multiple times since but every single time i fall more and more in love with the characters and the plot and the emotion
i can easily say it’s my favourite book or even series including the other two books
i recommend it to anyone who has a love for romance, drama, or books about mafia honestly

This surprised me as I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. Don't ask me why, I've zero idea why my expectations were so low maybe it was the cheesy title. It's my first book by this author and the start of a trilogy focusing on Alessio and Ayla. Also, check your triggers as Ayla has a tragic past which has left her with PTST which is described here in detail.
Ayla Abandonato flees her father and fiancée after years of abuse she’s finally had enough. Her father is the boss of the Famiglia, and his second-in-command Alberto is her fiance and the man who stars in all of Ayla’s nightmares. In a panic, she hides in a random car and unwittingly places herself in enemy territory ironically it may now be the safest place to hide.
Alessio Ivanshov is Bratva and Pakhan he also has every reason to hate the Italians. They are the reason for his mother's death and he’s vowed revenge determined to wipe every last one of them out. He has no idea the timid dirty urchin he discovered hiding under his bed is his enemy's daughter. All he knows is he’s drawn to her light and he can't help but want to protect her despite her obvious secrets.
It's not long before these two are all tangled up in each other but Alessio still has no idea just who the woman he’s fallen for actually is and Ayla is terrified that if he learns the truth it will be game over.
This is a slow burn and it needed to be especially considering Ayla’s traumatic past she has a horrific back story her story is far from pretty as for Alessio his heart is a vault and he’s prepared to fight tooth and nail to keep it that way only he never counted on Ayla slipping on past his sky-high defences.
We have plenty of past trauma and the inevitable repercussions of all of this, there's some truly romantic heartwarming emotion as Ayla’s presence heals Alessio just as much as he heals her. I just truly hope when the shit hits the fan he can look beyond the obvious without a knee-jerk reaction. I’m now looking forward to continuing with Alessio and Ayla’s journey.
