So, I've read these interconnected series so out of order lol - but the nice thing is, still super easy to follow each book as the characters tie into other books but are standalone as well.
I enjoyed this mafia romance and is probably one of my favorites from Michelle Heard's "Saint Monarch's Academy" universe. The dual perspectives were great, and I absolutely loved that the FMC was a strong, badass herself. Winter is strong because she has to be, losing her mom at the young age of 13 and feeling like it will be her duty to keep her dad and little brother safe has put a lot on her shoulders. Unfortunately, we have to witness Winter experience more heartache before she's able to fully accept and embrace the help and support of our MMC and his family/friends. I definitely teared up a moment or two for Winter and what she had to go through.
As for our MMC - Damien is fierce, super protective, possessive, and yes, merciless. He is the best at what he does and has no plans to entertain love or relationships as he's always known his path was set to be the protector of a skilled assassin once he leaves Saint Monarchs. I really liked the alpha vibes from him but also the way he struggled with Winter proving to be more of a distraction than he ever thought was possible for him. He finds himself wanting to protect her even as he is annoyed with her invading his cold and organized mind. Damien can't help but be impressed with Winter's strong and confident attitude and her abilities with weapons and fighting.
Just when both think they're about to be free of the other, even when they have doubt that separation is what they want, a twist and new heartache throw them together again - this time closer than ever. Winter finds herself standing on the edge of an emotional breaking point; even for someone as formidable as she is needs someone to lean on and trust. Damien quickly becomes that person for her and once both realize how much the other feels about their new situation/relationship - the heat explodes.
Overall, I recommend this book for anyone who wants a quick mafia romance that is less "dark romance" and more "gray/anti-hero" romance. There are emotional parts with grief and moments of our mc's being in danger, but over the darkness is pretty tame. It was a good read for wanting that mafia itch scratched without really wanting to delve back into a super heavy, overly dark romance.
Things I liked - tension & banter, Winter being a badass, the secondary characters connected to Damien, forced-proximity, and Damien's protectiveness over Winter.
***Content Information/Warnings***

- alpha, possessive MMC

i have never read a book that was as fast paced as this one! the nonstop action makes up for the unrealistic mega quick timeline i guess…i didn’t think it would be anything special but i honestly ate it up

Overall, just poorly written. The characters were two dimensional and the story was extremely rushed. This was my second time reading a Michelle Heard book and the second time I’ve been disappointed.
